What is Ischemic Heart Disease?

Ischemic heart disease is a chronic condition and one of the leading causes of sudden death in the world. It is where the arteries that supply oxygen and blood to your heart muscle become clogged with fatty plaque.

These fatty deposits can thicken, calcify and narrow the arteries to the point where they constrict blood flow a process called Atherosclerosis can cause one or more of the following conditions, alone or in combination.

  • Angina - chest pain
  • Heart attack - death of heart tissue
  • Cardiac arrest - sudden stopping of heart and collapse
  • Heart failure - gradual failure of the pumping function

Who does it strike? Ischemic heart disease is more common for men over the age of 45, but after age 70 is common in both men and women. There are two types of Ischemic heart disease risks - those you can't control and those you are able to take control.

Risk factors such as ageing and family history are obviously out of control, and the risk factors that can be ruled out through behavioural and lifestyle changes are smoking, high cholesterol, physical inactivity, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, panic attacks, anxiety and depression or social isolation.

This may not be the best way forward, though, as the likelihood is that any weight you lose will soon return with a vengeance, as these changes are just too dramatic to realistically follow for very long time.

Thus, instead of looking to lose a lot of weight fast you should embrace a more long term approach to weight loss, so that even though it may take longer time to lose weight in the beginning, it will be easier to keep the weight off for life.
